Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

Manoj Parulekar is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Birmingham Childrens Hospital, and the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Birmingham Children's Hospital is one of the largest children's hospital in the United Kingdom. Mr Parulekar contributes to a comprehensive paediatric ophthalmology service, dealing with simple and complex eye disorders including squints (strabismus),paediatric cataracts and glaucoma, oculoplastics (eyelid surgery) and neuro-ophthalmology, ocular oncology, and external eye diseases. He has special expertise in the treatment of eye cancers in children (ocular oncology) and is consultant ophthalmologist to the Birmingham National Retinoblastoma Unit, one of the two nationally designated retinoblastoma centres in the UK.

Mr Parulekar has a long standing association with the Oxford Eye Hospital, his alma mater. He contributes to the ocular motility service (squints and complex eye movement disorders), and the neuro-ophthalmology service serving Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.

Mr Parulekar is involved in clinical and basic science research, collaborating with biomedical scientists and other academics in UK and abroad to develop and evaluate new treatments and diagnostic tests for a variety of eye conditions. He is a Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham.

Mr Parulekar has published widely in scientific journals and contributed to highly regarded text books in ophthalmology.

Mr Parulekar has a major interest in international ophthalmology, contributing to and learning from ophthalmic services in developing countries. He is a trustee of Sightsavers International, a charity dealing with prevention and treatment of blindness.

Mr Parulekar contributes actively to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is program secretary, scientific committee and paediatric sub-committee member, and on the microsurgical training faculty. He is treasurer of the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress.
