Manoj V Parulekar

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

Manoj Parulekar is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Birmingham Childrens Hospital, and the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Oxford University Hospital provides a supra-regional service to Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire. Mr Parulekar has a long-standing association with the Oxford Eye Hospital, his alma mater. He contributes to the ocular motility service (squints and complex eye movement disorders), and the neuro-ophthalmology service.

Mr Parulekar is involved in clinical and basic science research, collaborating with biomedical scientists and other academics in UK and abroad to develop and evaluate new treatments and diagnostic tests for a variety of eye conditions. He is Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham.

Mr Parulekar has published widely in scientific journals and contributed to highly regarded textbooks in ophthalmology including the Oxford handbook of Ophthalmology.

Mr Parulekar has a major interest in international ophthalmology, contributing to and learning from ophthalmic services in developing countries. He is a trustee of Sightsavers International, a charity dealing with prevention and treatment of blindness. He is involved with the Vision 2020 links programme and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, developing ophthalmology services in Africa (Tanzania).

Mr Parulekar contributes actively to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is program secretary, scientific committee and paediatric sub-committee member, and on the microsurgical training faculty. He is treasurer of the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress.

Mr Parulekar has recently received a national clinical excellence award in recognition of his contribution to the NHS.
