Squint Surgery

With a tertiary referral practice for simple and complex cases with squint, Mr Parulekar has expertise in the management of disorders such as Duane syndrome, Brown syndrome, and Congenital Fibrosis syndromes. He is very proficient in squint surgery for nerve palsies, myasthenia and thyroid eye disease in children and adults.

Mr Parulekar has considerable experience in adjustable technique squint surgery. This technique is ideally suited for adult patients. The surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia, and the adjustment is performed once the patient is awake, under local anaesthesia, at the bedside. Patients with double vision, re-operations, and large angle squints are most likely to benefit from this technique

Mr Parulekar provides a comprehensive service for disorders of the tear sac and ducts, performing simple and complex surgery for blocked tear ducts and watery eyes, This includes probing, modern mono-canalicular tube insertion, dacryo cystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery, giving a very high success rate, comparable to the best published series in the world literature.

Mr Parulekar was the first eye surgeon in the UK to perform a corneal neurotisation procedure in 2015, with plastic surgery colleagues from Birmingham Children’s Hospital. This surgery requires a team approach with ophthalmic and plastic surgeons, electrophysiology support, and shared care with the referring ophthalmologists. The BCH team have performed the largest number of cases in the UK, attracting referrals from the UK and Europe.

Oculoplastics (Eyelid surgery & orbital/socket disorders)

Mr Parulekar is a national and international expert in children’s eyelid surgery. He has a very busy practice in the management of children’s eyelid disorders and has considerable experience in the treatment of ptosis & rare conditions like blepharophimosis syndrome, eyelid colobomas & Marcus Gunn jaw winking ptosis. He has one of the busiest pediatric enucleation and post
enucleation socket reconstruction practice in Europe, and attracts referrals from all over the UK and abroad.
He conducts training workshops on Eyelid and Orbital disorders, and Ptosis surgery for ophthalmologists at the American Association of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus annual meetings and at the World Congress of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
